I wish more people would appreciate Final Fantasy X-2 for what it is. It might not be the same dark themes as the first one but that’s the point. It’s about Yuna learning to cope with loss and hold on to the memories she has while trying to making new ones with the freedom she’s earned. It wouldn’t work as a serious game and sometimes the most relatable lessons you can learn from games are ones that aren’t exactly tragic story material.
I could even argue that for all of X-2’s bright and fluffy exterior, it’s still about some darker themes. It’s a story about a world, once trapped in stagnation, learning how to progress and advance again. It’s about people whose lives previously revolved around survival suddenly being able to focus on other things, like dreams and self-discovery… and grief.
This got embarrassingly long, so let me put all this under a cut…
